Vintage Demijohn

Did you know that the word demijohn probably comes from the French dame-jeanne, and would refer to the legend about Queen Joan I of Naples after taking shelter from a storm in a glassmaker's workshop in the village of Grasse.  Upon entering the craftsman's workshop he became interested in the process of making bottles.  The craftsman was amazed by the interest shown, so much so that he decided to inflate a bottle of enormous proportions to possibly show off to the sovereign.  The result was this utensil and in honor of her he decided to name it “Reine Jeanne”, to which the queen added that it was more appropriate to call her “Dame Jeanne”. There are other theories, but this is the one we like the most😍 Do you want to know how to differentiate an artisan from a new one?  You have to look carefully at the neck of the bottle.  The older ones have a rougher, unpolished edge, cut without any delicacy.  And a little further down, they feature a handmade thickened glass ring. Ours are also artisan, but they are not as old, although they were recovered from an old family wine business from the beginning of the 20th century.  And they have the characteristic non-uniform ring that differentiates them from those manufactured industrially. And the best of all is that no two are alike.
