Elephant Dung Stationery Set

Our elephant dung stationery sets make a great quirky but practical gift. They are Fair Trade and will make people smile – fancy sending friends elephant dung through the post! Each set comes with 20 sheets of handmade elephant dung paper and 10 envelopes, all decorated with a charming border of elephants. The writing paper is A5 size and can be written on with any pen of your choice. All the paper is acid-free. All the paper is made from 25% recycled paper and 75% elephant dung – yes really! Only natural dyes are used and the paper is acid-free. The ultimate in recycling, elephant dung is collected and boiled to sterilise it before the paper-making process. As unique as the animal that helped to produce it, each piece of paper is different depending on the diet of the elephant. Dimensions: Folder: 12.5 x 18 cm. Paper sheet size: A5 (unfolded) All the elephant dung paper is handmade at the Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust in Sri Lanka. The process of making elephant dung paper is a little different from making regular handmade paper. The fibres are pulped by the elephant, instead of by hand or machine, whilst they are digesting, then the readymade pulp comes out the back! The elephant dung is collected then vigorously boiled with margosa leaves, which are a natural disinfectant. The products in our elephant dung range are made by skilled and creative artisans using elephant dung paper from the Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust. Improving the outlook for the majestic elephants of Sri Lanka, Maximus has its workshop in the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF), a wonderful small charity that cares for sick, old, and disabled elephants. Working with initiatives like Maximus, the foundation is able to show the positive relationship local economies can have with these amazing animals, and work towards resolving the conflict between the elephants and the local communities as they turn to eating farmers’ crops as their natural habitat is destroyed.
