Small Elephant Dung Notebook

Beautifully unique and super sustainable, our elephant dung notebooks are the perfect gift for the elephant lover in your life. They are Fair Trade and perfect for use as a journal or simply as an everyday notebook. The elephant dung covers are made from 25% recycled paper and 75% elephant dung – yes really! The ultimate in recycling, elephant dung is collected and boiled to sterilise it before the paper-making process. As unique as the animal that helped to produce it, each piece of paper is different depending on the diet of the elephant. The notebooks are filled with approximately 50 pages of paddy husk paper, a beautiful handmade paper that is very smooth and easy to write on with any pen of your choice. All the paper is acid-free. The notebooks are handmade by skilled local artisans who complete the designs with a brass elephant motif. The brass elephant motifs are all hand finished and maybe a slightly different design to the image shown. Dimensions: Small - 9.5 x 11cm (Other sizes of these notebooks are available along with other elephant dung products. Please see our other listing pages for full range.) The process of making elephant dung paper is a little different to making regular handmade paper. The fibres are pulped by the elephant, instead of by hand or machine, whilst they are digesting, then the readymade pulp comes out the back! The elephant dung is collected then vigorously boiled with margosa leaves, which are a natural disinfectant, then mixed with 25% recycled paper, resulting in our beautiful elephant dung paper. Made from genuine elephant poo (don't worry, it doesn't smell) it also helps to reduce global waste and makes a difference in the communities that produce it. The charity (Maximus) that makes our notebooks helps look after old, disabled or sick elephants and educate the local residents on the need to conserve the Sri Lankan elephant population. Improving the outlook for the majestic elephants of Sri Lanka, Maximus has its workshop in the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF), a wonderful small charity that cares for sick, old, and disabled elephants. Working with initiatives like Maximus, the foundation is able to show the positive relationship local economies can have with these amazing animals, and work towards resolving the conflict between the elephants and the local communities as they turn to eating farmers’ crops as their natural habitat is destroyed. By making a purchase, you are helping to continue the fantastic work of our producers.
