Who is Maya Angelou? Marguerite Annie Johnson, known as Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet, civil rights activist, born in Missouri, best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first non-fiction bestseller by an African American woman. Angelou received several honours throughout her career, including two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (non-fiction) category, in 2005 and 2009. When MAya Angelou was 8, she suffered a trauma at the hands of her mom's boyfriend. After speaking up, the man was killed by her uncle. For the next five years, Angelou refused to speak. But finally literature helped her find her voice again. She wrote 36 books including cookbooks and her gift for crafting words has forever left us with some of the most inspirational and memorable quotes of our time. She spoke 6 languages. English, French, Spanish, Hebrew, Italian, and Fante (a dialect of Akan native to Ghana). She was the first black woman to conduct a cable car in San Francisco.
