Miso soup is made up of two essential ingredients: dashi (fish broth) which is the base of the soup and miso (flavored soybean paste) which is dissolved in the dashi. Two different types of miso are usually used, Shiro-Miso (white, soft and with little salt) or Aka-Miso (red, strong and salty). The most common ingredients in this soup are cubed Tofu, wakame seaweed and spring onion or leek. You can carry other ingredients such as vegetables (potatoes, carrots, daikon, cabbage, etc.), meat, fish or mushrooms.
