Iconic Raising the Flag poster. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a historic photograph taken on February 23, 1945 by Joe Rosenthal. The photo shows five U.S. Marines and a naval medic planting the U.S. flag at the top of Suribachi, the highest point on Japan's Iwo Jima Island, after the World War II Landing on Iwo Jima.
