More spicy, there are notes of chilli and Sichuan pepper, a nod to China, the country of origin of fireworks. This gin has an alcohol content of 57%, which makes it a Navy Strength. "Navy Strength" gin takes its name from its historical origin as a drink that sailors in the British Navy consumed in the 18th century. At that time, the British Royal Navy provided each ship with a daily allowance of gin for sailors, as alcohol could be used as a medicine, drinking water preservative and it could boost the morale of the troops. This gin is so called because it is made with a higher alcohol content than traditional gins, usually between 54% and 57% alcohol by volume. This higher alcohol content allowed the gin to remain stable and not lose its flavor if stored on board ships for long periods of time. Also, the higher alcohol content meant that if a barrel of gin spilled on the ship's gunpowder, it would not get wet and therefore still usable. Today, "Navy Strength" gin has become popular with cocktail drinkers for its intense taste and power, but is also loved for its connection to British naval history and tradition.
