
A rarity: an advertising poster for Lecoq & Bargoin sweet acorn coffee, launched in Clermont-Ferrand in the 19th century! History of a little-known Clermont-Ferrand brand This poster depicts a rooster, a nod to one of the brand's founders, Henri Lecoq. It was in fact at the beginning of the 19th century that Henri Lecoq and Jean-Baptiste Bargoin, two names well known to the people of Clermont, joined forces to create a brand of imitation coffee, café de glands dous Lecoq & Bargoin. Coffee substitutes, the success of the Belle Epoque At the time, coffee was a luxury product, and various entrepreneurs launched affordable coffee substitutes on the market. The former pharmacist and the botanist combined their passion for the properties of certain natural essences and discovered that sweet acorns, harvested in Spain or France, could provide a bitter and energizing drink, which was quite popular with the working classes! The Lecoq & Bargoin coffee brand was even a renowned Auvergne brand, long before Michelin tires were invented.
