Edvard Munch - The Scream

The work, created in 1895, is actually titled Love and Pain, and Munch himself pointed out that it depicts nothing more than a woman kissing a man on the neck. But the image is so powerful and disturbing that it has become a symbol of the beguiling, enigmatic female power over men, a vampire who seems to comfort but instead extinguishes male vitality. Striking against the gloomy background are the figure's flaming red hair, which looks like living drops of blood. © Fine Art Images – ARTOTHEK
