Edvard Munch - Sick Mood at Sunset

In this painting, one of the most famous works of art of the twentieth century, three customers sit off to one side, each lost in their own thoughts. The viewer, drawn to the light, feels cut off from the scene by a seamless glass wall. The four lonely and uncommunicative night owls seem to be as far away and separated from the viewer as they are from each other. Hopper admitted that in Nighthawks "I probably unconsciously painted the loneliness of a big city." © Fine Art Images - ARTOTHEK
