○ Latin name: Ricinus communis Castor, known scientifically as Ricinus communis, is a plant native to tropical Africa, but is now cultivated around the world for its oil-rich seeds. Castor is a fast-growing herbaceous plant that can reach a height of 1 to 5 meters. It has a thick stem and palmate leaves with 5 to 12 pointed lobes. The flowers of the castor bean are small and greenish, grouped in dense clusters. After flowering, they give rise to spiny capsules which contain the castor beans. Castor seeds are oval, shiny and have a speckled appearance. They are dark to light brown in color with characteristic patterns. Each seed is surrounded by a hard shell, which must be removed to access the seed itself. Castor beans are poisonous and contain a substance called ricin, which can be harmful if ingested.
