○ Latin name: Ricinus communis Castor is a plant native to East Africa and India. It is a perennial plant that can reach a height of several meters and grows in warm, tropical regions of the world. The leaves are large and webbed, with deeply cut veins. The flowers are small clusters of green color, which produce spiny capsules containing the castor beans. Castor beans are extremely toxic due to their content of ricin, a protein that acts as a powerful poison. However, castor oil extracted from the seeds has been used for centuries for its cosmetic properties. ֍ Castor is also known by the common name "palma Christi", which means "hand of Christ" in Latin, due to the particular shape of its leaves which resemble an open hand with fingers. This designation was first used by the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné in the 18th century.
