The mallard duck owes its name to the green color that the plumage of males takes on, at head level, during the breeding season. It should be noted that outside of this period, its plumage does not have this particular green tint; it actually has a beige coat similar to that of newborns. Measuring up to 68 cm long and weighing 1.2 kg, it is today the best known of all ducks.
