The black rhinoceros is a relatively imposing animal, the largest males can measure up to 3.50m and weigh up to 1500kg! It is distinguished from other rhinoceros breeds, not by its color, which is the same as that of a white rhinoceros (for example), but by the shape of its more stocky skull, as well as the presence of two deeply set horns. Solitary by nature, it only becomes active at nightfall and only mixes with its fellow creatures during the breeding season. Although the latter has a very good sense of smell and fine hearing, it should be noted that it is almost blind and struggles to distinguish shapes beyond 20m. The West African black rhinoceros has been declared extinct since 2011.
