In the 18th The variety was first identified in Austria in the 18th century and in the mid-19th century. century then known in Germany. Here it was called Lemberger or Limburger. The names refer to the origin of the vines. The vine was brought to Germany from Lemberg in Lower Styria in 1877 and was called Lemberger. The name Limburger comes from the town of the same name in Lower Austria. At the end of the 19th century, Century, “true-root Limburg Blaufränkisch vines” were offered. The name Blaufränkisch comes from a commission in 1875, which created a database to protect grape varieties from diseases and also to determine their origin, distribution, characteristics and synonyms. This gave each grape variety its own name. The Lemberger comes in many different varieties. From a light, fruity wine to wines rich in extract and tannins. Its aroma and taste are very fruity, such as blackberries, cherries and plums. Many winemakers not only produce a pure Lemberger wine, but also create new varieties together with other wines. Well-known examples include Lemberger with Tollinger, Trollinger with Lemberg or Lemberger with Pinot Noir. The wine that is proportionally higher is mentioned first. In Germany, Ruländer is known under the synonyms “Grauer Burgunder” or “Grauburgunder”. It has a reddish-grey berry skin, but is considered a white wine. The grape variety was brought to Germany from France. It is not clear whether it comes from Burgundy or Champagne. In 1375 it was conquered by Charles IV. to Hungary. From there in 1568 to Alsace and the Kaiserstuhl. Johann Seeger Ruland discovered this grape variety in an overgrown vineyard in Speyer in 1711. He processed the grapes and was delighted by their sweet and lovely taste. Therefore, he began to breed and spread the variety. The variety was named “Ruländer” in his honor. On the other hand, the grape variety is nicknamed “Gray Monk” because it was spread by Cistercian monks. Pinot Gris is often matured in steel tanks or large wooden barrels. This means that the Pinot Gris is usually dry, medium-bodied and slightly acidic. Ruländer, on the other hand, produces full-bodied wines with a pronounced sweetness. In this case, the wine was aged in barrique barrels. The term barrique is used in viticulture to describe the way in which wine is aged. The word barrique comes from French and means barrel. It indicates the barrel size that a port employee could load empty. This resulted in a barrel of 225l. Through storage and transport in barrels over sea, the winemakers noticed by chance that their wine was changing and gaining aromas. This change enabled them to market the wine more lucratively and storage in wooden barrels went from being the sole means of transport to being the standard method of storage. The newly manufactured barrels are flamed on the inside, which causes them to release tannins while the wine is stored in them. In addition to these, a vanilla aroma also develops in the wine.
