The fan-shaped leaves of the palm are carefully harvested without damaging them and then cut into fine fibers. These fibers are gently sun-dried to increase their natural strength and then either woven directly into basketry or twisted into cords, which are also used in many handmade home accessories such as placemats. Raffia not only stands for sustainable and stylish home accessories, but also for the preservation of centuries-old craft techniques and the responsible use of natural resources. Additional material: metal frame ➤ Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria This lampshade is handmade in Bali, Indonesia. When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to finished lampshade Our Tampah lampshades are made by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Bali. First, they hand-form a metal frame in the desired shape, which serves as a stable base. Then, with great sensitivity, they weave the narrowly cut and dried raffia fibres into the frame. The production of a lampshade takes about two hours in total and requires a great deal of patience and craftsmanship.
