The tough, hollow stems are harvested by hand and dried in the sun, giving them their characteristic firmness. The bamboo is then cut into fine strips or processed as a whole to produce durable and attractive products such as furniture, baskets or lampshades. Thanks to its light yet stable structure, bamboo is ideal for handmade home accessories. In addition, bamboo is extremely environmentally friendly because it grows without the use of pesticides and is a sustainable resource that helps preserve biodiversity in the growing areas. Additional material: Rattan ➤ Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria This lampshade is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to finished lampshade Our Kirma lampshades are made by experienced artisans on the Indonesian island of Java. The bamboo used is first dried and then cut into fine strips. These are arranged in an elegant, curved bell shape and artfully tied together with fine rattan fibers. The production of a lampshade takes about two hours in total and requires a great deal of patience and craftsmanship.
