Their branches and trunks are harvested and dried by hand without damaging the surrounding trees. The inside of the branches and trunks is used in various thicknesses for furniture, baskets or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for delicate wickerwork, such as the well-known "Viennese wickerwork". Since rattan palms require an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing provides an incentive for local people to maintain healthy, natural forests. Other materials: Jute ➤ Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to finished basket For our baskets, the rattan fibers are made flexible by experienced artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of West Java using heat in order to be able to shape them into the desired round shape. The processed rattan is then attached to straight rattan fibers arranged vertically in a circle using nails. For our Otere basket, sturdy handles made of natural jute with rattan bark strips are also tied to the basket. In total, it takes just under two hours to make one basket.
