Therefore, no rainforest needs to be cut down to obtain wood in Indonesia: the fast-growing tree is usually found in urban areas, where it is planted by humans as an ornament. The branches are regularly pruned to control growth and the wood is put to good use, including in furniture production. Our Trembesi wood is similar to teak in color and grain – but with a much better sustainability record. Additional material: Rattan ➤ Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria This stool is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to finished stool Our Subang stools are made in the workshops of experienced carpenters in the Indonesian province of Central Java. The wood used is first dried and sawn into boards. These are then processed into legs and seats and then glued, sanded and glazed. The woven seat is supplied by a specialised woven company. The production of a stool takes about four to five hours in total and requires a great deal of patience and craftsmanship.
