This abundant, renewable raw material comes from the banana plants that are widely used for agricultural purposes in Indonesia. The fibrous bark separates from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and dried in the sun for about a week, which naturally produces the intense brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic strands, approximately 6 mm thick, which are processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java. When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to finished wall decoration For our wall decorations, the experienced artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java weave the banana fiber with a lot of patience and sensitivity into a hand-formed frame made of thin iron rods. This means they permanently retain their stable, round shape. The filigree star pattern is then embroidered onto white cotton using a needle. In total, the production of a wall decoration takes about two hours.
