In 1833 Earl Grey, Earl of Howick Hall suspended the price of the East India Company's monopoly on the tea trade with China. 

Pure Chinese tea was thus infused with bergamot oil. 

This citrus plant was believed to protect the tea and prevent mold from forming during long sea voyages.
