Wooden Ibeji with beads

African carvings and tribal masks are objects created for religious and ceremonial purposes. The objects of a culture, linked to its tradition, add interest and flavor to any environment. This beaded wooden ibeji is a figurine for the cult of twins. Among the Yoruba, the birth of twins is an enormously positive development (and in Nigeria, where most of them are concentrated, they have the highest twin birth rate in the world). If one of the twins died, a figurine would be carved that the mother dresses and cares for as if it were still alive. The Yoruba ethnic group is, due to the action of slavery, the one that has left a deeper mark on the American continent. These Ibeji gave rise to the orisha in the rituals of Afro-Caribbean cultures.
