Small Elephant Dung Photo Album

A beautifully presented elephant dung photo album, supplied with its own box to protect your album and cherished photos. Something a bit different! Fair Trade, and the ultimate in eco friendly, these albums have 35 pages (70 sides) of handmade paddy husk paper, each interleaved with protective tissue paper. The elephant dung album covers are made from 25% recycled paper and 75% elephant dung – yes really! The small album can hold up to 60 standard 6 x4 inch photos. Dimensions: Small 22 x 15cm (Other sizes are available - please see our other listing pages) The albums are handmade by skilled local artisans and each album comes in its own elephant dung presentation box with a brass elephant motif on the top. The brass elephant motifs are all hand finished and may be a slightly different to the image. The beautiful paper inside the albums is handmade from paddy husk, a by-product of Sri Lanka’s rice milling industry. Its high fibre and silica content produces a lovely smooth paper and because rice is the staple food of the country there is plenty of paddy husk available. Pages are plain to give you the freedom to fill them however you choose! Photos can be put in with photo corners, spray mount or glue. The paper is acid-free. Each page has been interleaved with tissue paper to protect your photos. The products in our elephant dung range are made by skilled and creative artisans using elephant dung paper from the Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust. The ultimate in recycling, elephant dung is collected and boiled to sterilise it before the paper-making process. As unique as the animal that helped to produce it, each piece of paper is different depending on the diet of the elephant. Improving the outlook for the majestic elephants of Sri Lanka, Maximus has its workshop in the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF), a wonderful small charity that cares for sick, old, and disabled elephants. Working with initiatives like Maximus, the foundation is able to show the positive relationship local economies can have with these amazing animals, and work towards resolving the conflict between the elephants and the local communities as they turn to eating farmers’ crops as their natural habitat is destroyed.
