Composition: Sliced shallot. From the Latin Allium cepa, the shallot is a bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family, grown as a condiment and vegetable plant. The old name of the shallot derives from the Latin ascalonia (cepa) “(onion) of Ascalon”. Ascalon is a city located in the land of the Philistines in the current territory of Israel (now Ashkelon). According to legend, the Franks brought shallots back to the West after the siege of Ascalon, at the end of the first crusade. The shallot is very similar to the onion, but its flavor is more marked.
