Small difference, big effect - D-galactose D-galactose has numerous important functions in the human body. For example, it is an indispensable building material for the walls of the body cells and a component of many proteins, the so-called glycoproteins. The difference between galactose and glucose appears to be small - only one hydroxy group is mirror-inverted. But this supposedly small deviation brings with it a big difference: it enables the sugar to pass through cell membranes where insulin-dependent transport would otherwise fail. Galactose is then immediately converted into glucose in the cell. This property makes galactose particularly interesting for people who suffer from a dysfunction of the insulin receptor, because the "mirrored" sugar can counteract an energy deficit in the cells. This is important because insufficient glucose metabolism has negative effects on the nerve cells because not enough neurotransmitters can be formed. Our galactose is produced enzymatically. The starting material is food-grade lactose. The purity is 99.5%. Galactose is also suitable for people with milk sugar intolerance (lactose intolerance), where the enzyme lactase no longer splits lactose properly into galactose and glucose. Here, high-purity galactose is considered an effective alternative in order to still be able to use its physiological advantages, since the enzymatic metabolism by lactase is bypassed.
