The history of "von der Thannen" begins almost 130 years ago in the Bregenzerwald. In 1892, Kaspar Ignaz von der Thannen founded an embroidery business with five long and one short embroidery machine. He became the most important Schifflesticker in the Bregenzerwald and remained so until the decline of this branch of the economy.

Crafts are of particular importance in the Bregenzerwald and were a welcome employer for the predominantly rural region. The so-called Stickferggers were responsible for delivering the goods and collecting and delivering them to the exporter in Switzerland. Only the highest quality was accepted. Embroidery spread very quickly in Vorarlberg. The contract orders from Switzerland gained a high economic value, especially for the mountainous regions of the Bregenzerwald. In 1818, Emperor Franz I confirmed the privilege of the embroidery finishing trade, cotton fabric and embroidery thread could be imported duty-free.
