Specialty Coffee – Café Femenino, Peru

Café Femenino is a specialty coffee with a syrupy body and low acidity. Very intense, it produces aromas of dark chocolate and caramel. It is very long in the mouth, with a creamy, smooth, soft and almost sweet texture. We opted for a rather intermediate roast which makes this coffee extremely forgiving. It is suitable for espresso and gentle methods, with the impression of eating a square of 98% cocoa dark chocolate.     Features - Producer: CECANOR - Region: Lambayeque - Species: Arabica - Varieties: Tipica, Catimor, Bourbon, Colombia, Villa Sarchi - Altitude: 1000-2050m - Harvest: April-September - Process: Washed - Flavors: Chocolate, caramel - SCA rating: 83 The history of coffee Coffee production in Peru has always involved a central role for women, although economic power has traditionally been held by men. In 2004, 464 Peruvian coffee producers united to reverse this dynamic and work towards greater autonomy. In collaboration with OPTCO, they created a market for specialty coffee produced exclusively by women, thereby catalyzing social change and the emancipation of disadvantaged women coffee farmers. The Café Femenino movement now extends to thousands of women farmers in nine countries around the world.     Café Femenino requires participating cooperatives to give women farmers control of income, land ownership and recognition for the exceptional quality of their coffee. Thanks to this economic control, the women farmers of Cecanor have invested Café Femenino funds in community projects such as libraries, schools, health and nutrition education programs, as well as initiatives to build self-esteem. self, promote awareness of Human Rights and promote literacy in remote regions of the country.     Since the program’s origins in 2004, the women of Café Femenino have generated important social change within their communities. By overcoming low social status due to prejudice, difficult living conditions and lack of self-esteem linked to a lack of formal education, these women successfully fought against several generations of inequality. 13 years later, rates of domestic violence and malnutrition have decreased, rates of education and income equality have increased, and women are no longer afraid to speak out. Their determination and courage have given the women of their community increased decision-making power, greater income and newfound dignity.
