Barberry is a berry harvested in Iran, in the Khorasan region (the same as our saffron, from a shrub of the Berberidaceae family. This berry is highly appreciated for its sweet and tangy notes. Before lemons and other citrus fruits became widely available in Europe, it was popular for bringing a tart/citric flavor to dishes.
