Photography Lesson

With Photography Lesson, Stephen Shore explores the different ways of looking at and understanding photography in all its forms: iconic images or found photographs, negatives or digital files. Based on his many years teaching photography at Bard College, New York, this book is an indispensable tool for students and teachers, but also for anyone who wants to take better photographs or learn how to better watch them. In addition to a selection of the author's photographs, Leçon de photographie is illustrated with images from all periods of the history of photography, from the works of founding masters such as Alfred Stieglitz and Walker Evans to those of contemporary artists such as Collier Schorr. and Thomas Struth. All genres are covered: street photography, art photography and documentary photography, as well as images by anonymous photographers, whether it is an old photograph or an aerial photograph taken as part of a topographic survey. Through a clear, intelligent and accessible text, Stephen Shore refers to these images to show us how, facing the lens, the world turns into photography. Born in New York in 1947, Stephen Shore frequented Andy Warhol's Factory from the age of 17, photographing the artist and his entourage. At the age of 23, he became the first photographer to be honoured, during his lifetime, with a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. Since then, his photographs have been presented in many museums around the world. A pioneer in his field, Stephen Shore has influenced generations of photographers. In 1982, he was appointed Director of the Photography Studies Program at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. He currently holds the Susan Weber Soros Chair of Art Education there.
