The Grisettes de Montpellier are delicious balls of "" cooked sugar "" made from two emblematic ingredients of the Montpellier basin: Honey and Liquorice. It is the only historical and authentic specialty of Montpellier.
They would be according to some French confectionery experts "" the oldest candy in France "". When an Apothecary * created the Grisettes recipe in the year 1150 at the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier, he was far from imagining that the candy would be present in the hearts of Montpellier people 9 centuries later. As early as the 12th century, the town's merchants used delicious black marbles as extra currency for pilgrims to smooth their route to Compostela. Legend has it that the sweets took the name "Grisettes" in homage to the beautiful Montpellier ladies, coquettish, gallant and dressed in gray fabrics.
Made according to the ancestral recipe, the Grisettes de Montpellier have stood the test of time and arouse covetousness and curiosity more than ever. The notoriety of the candy has been built over the history of the City with Raymond Muller, Founder and owner of the Brand from 1963 to 2017 to the point that they are now part of Montpellier's DNA. .
* The candy was originally a medicine because it has medicinal properties against sore throats. Ingredients: sugar, glucose syrup, honey (12%), liquorice, natural aromas of honey and star anise, coloring (medicinal charcoal).
