Dependence on oil, urban sprawl, congested roads, noise and air pollution, road insecurity, loss of biodiversity... The consequences of excessive use of private cars are serious for the environment, health and quality of life. The promise of always going faster and further, thanks to ever bigger and more powerful vehicles, has made us dependent on this mode of transport: in France, 60% of journeys are made by car, and up to 80% in rural and peri-urban areas. How can we combat automobile obesity and the need to move around constantly? A specialist in mobility issues, Ludovic Bu affirms: yes, we can get around without a car. To achieve this, we need to transform cities, encourage travel on foot and by bicycle, but also recreate proximity in peri-urban and rural areas with the services and shops that everyone needs on a daily basis.
