How humanity is being eaten

While animal protein is no longer necessary for the nutrition of a majority of humans, hundreds of millions of animals are killed every day for food. This mass exploitation, erected into a global system, not only raises a fundamental ethical question. It constitutes a crucial ecological risk that endangers the habitability of the planet. Livestock farming takes up 77% of the world's agricultural land, while fishing covers more than half of the world's oceans. Both are undoubtedly the main gravediggers of wild biodiversity. But they are also on track to become the biggest contributors to climate change: the meat sector already accounts for nearly 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and demand for livestock products could grow by another 144% by mid-century. Faced with this disaster, it is no longer time to distinguish or oppose industrial and artisanal practices. In reality, the two are combined under the effect of an insatiable appetite for animal protein that is devouring the planet. This critical situation places everyone face to face with their responsibilities. As attractive alternatives to meat consumption emerge, citizens, farmers, communities, businesses and governments now have the power to encourage a food transition that respects living things and is crucial to the survival of humanity.
