Their branches and trunks are harvested and dried by hand without damaging the surrounding trees. The inside of the branches and trunks is used in various thicknesses for furniture, baskets or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for delicate wickerwork, such as the well-known "Viennese wickerwork". Since rattan palms require an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing provides an incentive for local people to maintain healthy, natural forests. Additional material: wood ➤ Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria When selecting our local production partners, we attach importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to the finished vase Our Kamari vases are carefully handcrafted by experienced artisans on the Indonesian island of Lombok. First, a round piece of wood is hollowed out and sawn into the shape of a bowl, which later forms the lower half of the vase. The upper part is created by weaving thick rattan fibers together with fine strips of rattan bark. The entire vase is then sprayed with brown paint. The production of a single vase takes about three hours and requires both patience and a high degree of craftsmanship.
