Jin Mu Dan is a little-known rock oolong that has recently been gaining traction in China. The name of this tea would translate into Golden Peony and its origin is quite complex as it derives from the crossing of two camellia cultivars which are quite unusual for the Wuyi Mountains area. The two precursors of this oolong, in fact, are Tie Guan Yin and Hung Jin Gui which are found and produced mostly in the Anxi region (always within Fujian such as the Wuyi mountains area). Then, once these two cultivars mentioned above have been hybridized, the result is taken to the Wuyi Mountains where the plant can benefit from the rocky soil to give even more depth to its flavors. Compared to other rock oolongs, this tea is generally more delicate on the palate, not highlighting the characteristic roasting, instead immediately revealing the sweetness of certain dried fruit and a light floral scent.
