Yirgacheffe coffee is one of the most loved beans in the world, due to its unique aromas and flavors. Although the name Yirgacheffe is frequently used to describe the entire region, the correct name for the region is Gedeo, which is part of the Ethiopian state Southern Nations and Nationalities People's Region (SNNPR). Yirgacheffe is “just” one of the multiple Woredas that can be found in the Gedeo region. Famous Woredas are Gedeb, Dilla Zuria, Bule, Yirgacheffe, Wenago and Kochere, but there are many other communities all of which produce coffee. Learn about the Gedeo Zone coffee communities, agricultural culture and our farm in the Risiti community. Take the road south, pass through the town of Hawassa and you will enter the green highlands of the SNNPR. After a quick coffee stop in Dila, you are in the coffee growing area of Gedeo, west of Guji and south of Sidama. The Gedeo area is famous for its fertile volcanic landscape offering breathtaking views. After a day's drive, you will find the Woreda of Risiti, near Gedeb. With coffee trees reaching 3 meters in height, covered in tropical fruit trees, you know you're in the right place to get a unique coffee. The people of the region welcome you with a warm smile. Although part of the SNNPR, the Gedeo zone has its own language and traditions. Most Gedeo residents are small farmers, growing several crops like corn, avocados and coffee on a plot ranging from half a hectare to 2 hectares. Maintaining a living income is a major concern in the region and more and more people are leaving for other regions in search of development opportunities. Within the Risiti coffee community is the small, friendly community of Beriti. Surrounded by mountainous hills, Bette Buna has a small farm located at an altitude of 1,850 to 2,100 meters above sea level and works closely with dedicated partner coffee farmers. Compared to the Guji area, the sun during the day is quite strong. The coffee cherries are picked by hand from early morning until midday, from late November to mid-January. The cherries are collected late in the afternoon and throughout the evening at the washing station and at various collection points. The grains will be measured and sorted in the washing station into different batches for washed, honey, anaerobic and natural fermentation. All coffees are traceable to Bette Buna's farm or their partner coffee growers. During the day, the Bette Buna teams carry out a very controlled drying process, to guarantee that the beans develop evenly and harmoniously to reach their maximum flavors. All coffee is stored in pro bean bags for a rest period of at least 4 months. Mentewab, our new coffee from Ethiopia, lends itself very well to preparation using gentle methods (filter, V60, Chemex and Piston). It will also be enjoyed as an espresso!
