Black sesame seeds are grown in many parts of the world, including Africa, India, and Asia. Seeds are harvested when the plant capsules begin to dry and open. Sesame is an oleaginous plant whose seed is mainly consumed. It is eaten white, golden or black. Sesame gives off powerful aromas when roasted, but it is nevertheless delicious raw. It can be eaten as a salad topping, in breadcrumbs, roasted and ground to make gomasio. Black sesame seeds are often used in Asian cuisine to add flavor and texture to dishes. They are often used to garnish noodle dishes, soups and stews, or added to sauces and marinades to add flavor.
