Lesbos is a huge forest of olive trees. About 11 million olive trees currently grow on this 1,634 km² island and olive oil production has always been one of the predominant occupations of its inhabitants. The island's olive grove is also one of the oldest in Greece.
Three varieties dominate on the island The Kolovi variety occupies 65% of the olive groves, Adramytiani, native to Asia Minor, 30%, and Ladolia the remaining 5%.
The diversity of the natural landscape is one of the first characteristics of the island. The interior is semi-mountainous, rough and irregular in appearance. Although covered with abundant vegetation, the island is not crossed by real rivers, but only streams. The climate is mild, Mediterranean, with significant sunshine throughout the year.
The island is often swept by strong northerly and northwesterly winds. Winters are mild and short, rainy, and summers hot and dry.
There is something special about Lesbos' olive groves.
In the mountains above the Plomari region, where the Protoulis family estates are located, no task is accomplished without hard work.
For guaranteed oil quality, the fruit must be picked from the tree at the right time. The nets have to be stretched and picked up several times and you have to climb the steep sloping terraces.

Protoulis has 30 hectares of organic olive groves in the mountainous and semi-mountainous area overlooking Plomari. The only vertically integrated company on the island, it has two olive oil production units: one in Megalohori and the other in Trygonas.
Megalohori, the most mountainous village of Lesbos, located at an altitude of 670 m, is home to the first mill of the Protoulis company, with an interior surface area of 600 m².
When the unit started to operate, it only had hydraulic presses.
Today, following gradual upgrades, it has state-of-the-art equipment with a cold extraction pressing capacity of 3.5 tons per hour. The olive oil produced is stored in 500 ton stainless steel tanks. The maturation process takes place under perfect thermal insulation conditions, protected from light. The packaging workshop is equipped with a bottling line for glass containers and two others for tinplate containers ...
