After extraction, the clay is cleaned and mixed with water, which makes it pliable and malleable. Craftsmen use it to make vases, bowls and many other everyday objects. The material is then fired at high temperatures, which gives it its strength and durability. This processing makes clay a durable and versatile material. ➤Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria When selecting our local production partners, we attach importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to the finished vase For our Nusa vases, experienced artisans in the Indonesian province of Central Java rely on a tried and tested process. First, a particularly thin clay is carefully poured into a handmade mold. This shape creates the characteristic ring-shaped silhouette of the vase. The vase is then given a double coat of white paint to ensure an even, flawless surface. In total, the production of a vase takes about an hour.
