We work with cocoa farmers from the community of “Tesoro Escondido” located in the Choco region (virgin and threatened forest region in northwestern Ecuador), which has about 50 families. In this nature reserve there is a partnership with an Ecuadorian NGO, proyecto Washu, and the University of Sussex in England as part of a conservation project. This project encompasses the protection of the primary forest as well as the habitat of an endemic primate species, the brown-headed spider monkey. The marketing of cocoa grown by the community as part of this project helps to ensure and even increase the income of families in the area, without excessive exploitation of natural resources.
