The hazelnut and its peculiarities The hazelnut bush or hazel bush also goes by the name of common hazel. It belongs to the birch family and reaches heights of around 5 m. As a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or very rarely as an even higher tree, the hazel is widespread in our latitudes and in the rest of Europe. Since the hazel bushes prefer rather cool temperatures, they are found in southern Europe at higher altitudes than in the north. Warm summers, light forests and a sub-oceanic or oceanic climate are ideal for their growth. In the first year the hazel bush grows in height, in the following year it branches out. The lifespan of hazelnut bushes is 80 to 100 years. They have winter buds and both sun leaves and shadow leaves. The flowering time is in January and the following months.
