It is made up of 16 main islands, six smaller islands and numerous islets. The cultivation of Galapagos coffee began in 1875 on the island of San Cristobal, the main producer along with the island of Santa Cruz. Coffee is produced at unusually low altitudes, between 200 and 300 meters above sea level. Thanks to the oceanic Humboldt current, the temperatures of the islands are milder, similar to what they would be at an altitude of 1200 meters on the mainland. These climatic conditions, together with the volcanic soil rich in nutrients, make it possible to produce high quality coffee. All the coffee grown in the Galapagos Islands is of the Arabica and organic variety. In 1998 the Ecuadorian government banned most chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Hacienda El Cafetal the farm where coffee cultivation began in Galapagos. It has 300 hectares of crops with eco-friendly practices that preserve the environment.
