THE ORIGINS

The abundance of woody plants is an important source of raw materials for rural African women. The harvesting of their fruits and their resale represent the main source of income-generating activity for the producers.

Local foods:

Harvested: woody products (such as baobab fruit) fall from the tree at maturity. The producers collect the fruits from the ground.

Cultivated: the producers cultivate the products in the fields, they are harvested when ripe and then processed for sale.

THE PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

The main problem encountered by African women producers is the rotting of crops due to the abundance of produce during the harvest season. Supply is then greater than market demand. Products lose value. Their high concentration at the same period leads to a drop in their purchase price.

The lack of electricity, means of conservation and means of transport leads to the loss of part of the unsold harvests or leads to the abandonment of unsold products on the market.

The producers, having not studied, do not have access to the world market and cannot access the fair trade or organic certificate.

NGO KANIA DONSE FANYI

Created in 1995 in Kindia (Republic of Guinea), the NGO KDF aims to train African women in rural areas in the techniques of processing and preserving local products. It operates at the local, national, sub-regional and international level.

SOLUTIONS PROVIDED

Training: The NGO KDF trains producers in solar drying techniques and conservation of local products. Training is conducted in the local language.

Processing: The NGO buys unsold products from producers and uses them for processing. Unsold mangoes are processed using traditional techniques (solar drying, preparation into jam or juice).

INGREDIENT FROM AFRICA

Created in 2016 in Nantes, France, the company aims to promote healthy, tasty and responsible food products. The products are grown without the use of chemicals and purchased at fair prices to support the empowerment of African women in rural areas.
