L’Ugo - Liquore di melissa is the first lemon balm liquor ever crafted. His story started in 2005, in a city in the North of Italy, near the Alps, where Roland Gruber, Italian bartender, created the White Spritz called Hugo, a variation of the classic Spritz. He mixed Prosecco, soda, and a lemon balm sirop crafted nearby.
He served Hugo until 2008, when he closed his bar. He didn’t consider this cocktail to be special, as a matter of fact he even forgot about it.
In 2009 he saw on the menu of a cocktail bar in Dublin the “Cocktail of the day: Hugo, with Prosecco, soda and elderflower”. «I didn’t make my cocktail like this» he thought.
The next year, the German magazine Mixology, focused on the history of this cocktail and found out the bartender who created it.
I personally went meeting Roland Gruber to show him how I created my product starting only from his creation. Thanks to him I was also able to listen firsthand to this story that I have just shared here.
