This chili pepper, which is spicy only in name, is in reality a berry that is not at all spicy but which surprises with its warm, sweet and fragrant notes. This berry is the dried fruit of the Pimenta dioica tree native to Mexico, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. Its use is not new; the Aztecs already used it to flavor chocolate or during funeral ceremonies. Legend has it that the berry takes its name from Christopher Columbus who is said to have named it "Jamaica Pepper" during an expedition, mistakenly thinking that it was a pepper of the Piper nigrum variety alone, this berry evokes the aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and pepper. It is also sometimes replaced in recipes by the All Spice mix, which has very similar flavors. It will flavor broths, marinades, compotes.Origin: Jamaica
