It was by sea that the Kandler family arrived in Languedoc more than 30 years ago. While few people believe in the potential of this wine region, the Franco-German family decides to buy lost land in the Minervois hinterland in Roubia, between land and sea, between the medieval city of
Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. What will become Château Tourril takes its name from the “Pierre du Tourril”, a former Gallo-Roman signal tower which has overlooked this garrigue setting for 2000 years. The 2nd generation took over the reins in 2014 to expand the estate, convert it to certified organic agriculture, develop its notoriety and export sales.
Driven by his passion for wines from the south of France, Stephan Kandler met Bertrand Hardy, from another family of Rhône Valley winegrowers, to make a first joint organic vintage in 2016 on his terroir of Domaine des Pentelines, while near Avignon. After 3 vintages in common, Bertrand is retiring and quite naturally suggested that Stephan take over: the 24-hectare organic nugget in AOP Côtes du Rhône Villages Gadagne, whose pebble terroir is identical to that of Châteauneuf du Pape. , came to enlarge the Vignobles Kandler family.
