The origins of this very popular sauce in Surinam and Guyana are Asian. Indeed "Sate" means skewers in Javanese and it is for this reason that it can be confused with satay sauce, especially since satay sauce also has a version with peanuts.
This sauce was brought to the region by Indonesian immigrant workers.
Saté sauce is a soy-based sauce and it is an essential ingredient to make bami which is a fried noodle dish, and nassi which is a fried rice dish.
