Our history

“What does Bærenman actually mean?", "Who is this Bærenman?“and “How do you actually pronounce Bærenman?”“

All questions that I have been asked again and again over the last few years and months. There is no clear answer to this and there should not be. But there shouldn't be anything mythical about it either. Bærenman is what each individual makes of it and allows it to be. There is a Bærenman in all of us.

The name I The logo

The name Bærenman has two backgrounds. On the one hand, it represents a homage to the nature of my homeland, which embodies the “bearish” and original, and on the other hand, it refers to an old story from my place.

My hometown is in the middle of a biodiversity hot spot called the Pannonian, which is crossed by the Leitha river. Almost untouched by human influence, it meanders through the surrounding Leitha floodplains, making its way, reinventing its riverbed and appearance every year. This untamedness is also reflected in the flora and fauna of the surrounding landscape and shows an incredible biodiversity. A spot of nature that still seems to be in order, a spot where time is still described as day and night, a spot where soul and spirit can still be one with their surroundings.

In the heart of our small town of Landegg there is a monument called “Bear Driver”, which symbolically represents an old, traditional story. Back in the day, a bear is said to have wandered through the surrounding forests and spread fear and terror. The bravest men in the town went out at night to catch Master Petz, but they didn't succeed because instead of a bear, only the prince's dog came before them, for which they received malice and shame from the surrounding villages. Since then, the Landeggers have been commonly referred to as bear drivers.

You can read the whole story in the original text here.

The Bærenman logo reflects, on the one hand, what is original and natural in us, and on the other hand, modern people in their urbanized world, which is increasingly characterized by technology and progress, where everything has to be faster and better, where evolution is already taking place on the assembly line and has now overtaken us humans over the course of our lives. This is the difficulty of our time, to keep these two parts of us in balance and perfect harmony.

Uabout me

My name is Markus Gselmann, born. at 13th.12.1984 in Eisenstadt. After studying molecular microbiology at the University of Vienna, I went out into the wide world. The city of Bergen in Norway was to be my home for the next 7 years. As fate would have it, I was soon hired to build a distillery that is now known beyond European borders. My previous knowledge from our small fruit distillery at home, which my father ran with the greatest care since my childhood days, and the knowledge of chemistry and microbiology I acquired during my studies, proved to be the perfect mix for my new employers for their new master distiller, product developer and production manager. Although my job was very flexible and I had free rein, I still felt restricted by the given framework. The idea of having my own distillery, where I could run and operate as I wish, quickly arose.

The Distillery

After a short time, a location was found at the former Coca-Cola Amatil site in my town. In January 2019 we began renovating the premises, which took up countless hours of work and continually presented us with new challenges. The remains of the building, which had been vacant for over 30 years, first had to be removed before the actual renovation could begin. The important power and water supply lines, a sewer and an automatic roller door were then installed on our own. In August 2020 the time had come. The heart, our distillery, could be built. A tasting room with a bar was subsequently set up, which today offers our visitors a unique ambience in a rustic setting with a view of our distillery.

We would also be happy to organize your tasting, birthday party or company party here. Contact us for a non-binding offer.

A dog named Flake

As you have inevitably noticed, a white dog keeps appearing at my side. Flocke, a mixed-race lady, grew up on a landfill in Hungary, who came to Austria via a detour from a killing station. Flocke has been at my side since 2012, accompanied me to Norway over the years and is basically the mastermind of our company, because one thing is certain, no other dog has such a good nose for excellent spirits as Flocke.
