bert Alwin Schlumberger, later founder of the Schlumberger company, was born on September 12 in Stuttgart. After completing his business apprenticeship, he moves to Reims (France) in the Champagne region, where he learns the trade of cellar master in the oldest champagne winery, Ruinart Père et Fils, and soon rises to become production manager.
1842
After his marriage to the Austrian Sophie Kirchner, he moves to Vienna. With the founding of the Schlumberger house in 1842, Robert Alwin Schlumberger was the first in Austria to start producing champagne.
"A series of experiments with Austrian wines led me to the positive certainty that Austria also offers the opportunity to produce sparkling wines of such perfection that they can rightly be compared to those produced in Champagne." (Robert Alvin Schlumberger, 1842). Gradually, Schlumberger also acquired several adjacent cellars in Vienna-Heiligenstadt. These are still the heart of the Schlumberger wine and sparkling wine cellars today.
1845
As early as 1845, Schlumberger was awarded numerous medals. "Schlumberger Champagner" became the favorite drink of Viennese society and the winery was appointed purveyor to the Imperial & Royal Court. A visible sign of the success of the Schlumberger house is the elevation of the company founder to the hereditary nobility as "Edler von Goldeck".
1862
On the occasion of the World Exhibition in London, the "Vöslauer sparkling wine", which Schlumberger now calls "Sparkling Vöslauer", was deemed worthy of being placed on Queen Victoria's wine list.
1919
Due to the Peace Treaty of Saint-Germain, "Schlumberger Champagne" can no longer be called that. The production method (traditional bottle fermentation) and the processing of exclusively local grapes, together with the highest digestibility, remain essential quality features of Schlumberger to this day.
1973
Led by the founding family for four generations, Schlumberger is managed by the childless Dr. Robert Schlumberger handed over to the House of Underberg. The traditional Viennese company becomes part of the well-known Underberg family business. This ensures for future generations that Schlumberger is made exclusively from Austrian grapes and strictly according to the "Méthode Traditionnelle".
1986
The Schlumberger company dares to go public on the Vienna Stock Exchange.
1994
A comprehensive quality management system that begins with the grapes means that Schlumberger was the first sparkling wine producer in the German-speaking region to be ISO9001 certified as early as 1994.
2007
Innovations make the market. Schlumberger WHITE Secco is successfully launched. As the innovation of the year, WHITE Secco offers a unique, slightly sparkling, fruity and fresh treat as the first Austrian answer to Prosecco.
2009
With the purchase of the Hochriegl Sektkellerei, Schlumberger is expanding its sparkling wine expertise on the Austrian market. The Hochriegl brand, which has existed since 1890, is the best-selling Austrian sparkling wine brand and is to be further developed accordingly.
2010
October 22nd is officially proclaimed the "Day of Austrian Sparkling Wine" and will in future serve to raise awareness of the origin, quality and diversity of Austrian sparkling wine products. Along with other local sparkling wine producers, Schlumberger played a key role in the idea and implementation of this initiative.
2011
The successful innovation course continues. Schlumberger ROSÉ Secco is launched and rounds off the brand's lifestyle range (with WHITE Secco and GOLD). With the introduction of Hochriegl Frizzante 8, a first step in the further development of the Hochriegl range is taken.
In addition to the sparkling wine business, the production, marketing and sale of bitter drinks are a core area of the company. With the takeover of the SENS brand, this competence is also extended to the non-alcoholic bitter drinks market.
2014
The House of Schlumberger is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its founder Robert Alwin Schlumberger, who was born on September 12, 1814 and was one of the first in Austria to produce white sparkling wine in the style of French champagne. As a pioneer with vision, he was already convinced of the quality of Austrian grapes and the importance of regional value creation. These values are still reflected in the corporate strategy today.
As the new main shareholder, the entrepreneur-managed Sastre Holding, based in Switzerland, is committed to Austrian tradition and Schlumberger's firm roots in Austria. In addition to the market position on the domestic market, the red-white-red roots and the regional added value, the future focus will increasingly be on the export of the Schlumberger brand.
The reintroduction of the sparkling wine tax slows down the boom in the domestic sparkling wine industry, which has continued since the tax was abolished in 2005, and is causing a sharp decline in the sparkling wine market. Frizzante products remain exempt from the tax The Frizzante market is growing again for the first time in years.
2016
The purchase of the Mozart distillery based in Salzburg means another important step in the export business. With the acquisition of the associated Mozart chocolate liqueur brand, Schlumberger is strengthening its own brand portfolio with another traditional premium brand.
