When Edgar Schäfer bottled the first wine in 1948, he founded the family winery in its current form; the winemaking tradition in the Schäfer family is a few hundred years older. In 1964, the Schäfer winery escaped the narrowness of the village center: In the south of Mussbach, in the middle of the sea of vines, a residential building with 2 basement floors was built. In 1990 a wine and machine hall was added. Axel Schäfer, Edgar Schäfer's son, has been running the winery since 1991. By leasing the Heinrich Kurz Söhne winery, he almost doubled the operating area in 1994.
After grandson Frank Schäfer joined the winery in 2013, the business was able to expand again by adding a few first-class locations through leasing on the Haardt. This is where mainly the wines of the “Limit” series are produced on the “Große-Gewächs-Lagen” in Herrenletten and Bürgergarten.

We operate our subject in harmony with nature. The aim is to grow healthy plants on healthy soils that will give us healthy grapes. By foregoing high yields, we produce wholesome wines and sparkling wines of high quality. In the cellar, too, we remain true to the most important principle - to mess with nature as little as possible: We treat the wines very carefully and let the wine develop in peace. That means we pump and filter it as little as possible and happily accept differences in taste from year to year.
