The beautiful story of the Savoyard Brewers
From adventure with a capital A to organic and craft beer with a capital B, there is only one step. But a giant step in the history of Savoyard brewers, thirsty for quality, traditional brewing and brewing innovation.
Band of Brothers
Taken over by Antoine and Étienne Onorati, two brothers passionate about beer and organic products, the Brasseurs Savoyards brewery, which was then in difficulty, moved into a new dimension on February 4, 2014: that of organic bubbles. Only the original name has survived. It must be said that “Les Brasseurs Savoyards” was already a brand promise worth a long speech.
Everything was in this name: the brewing know-how, the local and artisanal dimension of the brewery, this pride in producing beers labeled terroir. Why change it? The Onorati brothers therefore retained this title of Savoyard Brewers to restore its brewing nobility, with the objectives of quality, 100% organic, and innovative but authentic beers. Inspired by American Craft Breweries, they made their brewery a place that meets three essential criteria: human-sized, independent and traditional.
In addition to the name Brasseurs Savoyards, they kept the brewing room and then wiped the slate clean of the past. Everything else has changed: the packaging line, the design of the labels, the name of the products with the creation of new ranges, the packaging, and of course… the recipes!
The masters of the brewery
Inseparable from this bold about-face and this bet on the future of organic and craft beer, hiring a seasoned master brewer was a decisive choice. Claude Thiery, with 35 years of experience in renowned breweries or on his own, joined the adventure from the start to bring his know-how and his touch of genius to the existing beers: blonde, white, amber, brown, génépi and blueberry.
After two years of activity, the Brasseurs Savoyards have created a more elaborate range, in the “craft” spirit and inspired by different countries (USA, Belgium, etc.): the Nonne. This name may seem incongruous. And yet, beer has always been a women's story.
For centuries, abbey beers have been part of brewing heritage. Hildegarde de Bingen, a Benedictine nun with a capital B, a botanist and beer expert ahead of her time, had the revolutionary idea of introducing hops into the cereal-based beers of the time. By bringing a new bitterness and complexity, it gave beer a new destiny. The Savoyard Brewers paid tribute to her with a dedicated range, called La Nonne, launched in 2016. This range was first embodied in the Nonne Triple and the Nonne I.P.HAS. ( India Pale Ale), before expanding to Nonne A.P.HAS. ( American Pale Ale) then the Nun Golden Ale.
Competition beast
Very quickly, the Savoyard Brewers took part in competitions and won awards: Concours Général Agricole (Agricultural Show) 2016, 2017, 2018, World Beer Awards, France Bière Challenge… Successes that they savored like a good beer from the bottle, celebrating each victory with a close-knit team, passionate about the art of brewing.
Success pushed them to think bigger: in the summer of 2017, the Brasseurs savoyards moved to Alby-sur-Chéran in a building 2.5 times larger than the previous one. In 2018, they welcomed 7 new tanks, bringing their total to 19, almost as many as employees! Enough to brew new ideas and high-quality organic beers, artisanal and steeped in tradition.
What does not change are the company's values: respect for the environment, love of the brewing sector, the desire to develop a family business with a spirit of brotherhood and mutual aid, unwavering integrity, and the desire to offer healthy products for daily consumption.
